Where does the time go? We get so busy with our daily routines and taking care of all our responsibilities that the weeks just seem to fly by, and then the months, and then the years…. Do you ever feel like your life is just passing you by?
I see a lot of people, especially professional women who are juggling work and family, trying to do it all, end up feeling drained and unsatisfied. As the Wellness Director for over 7000 employees, I saw people struggling every day with feeling stressed out, overwhelmed, and not having enough energy to get through their day.
If you can relate to this, you’re definitely not alone! Here’s one of the most common mistakes that will drain your energy, keep you feeling stressed, and discontented…
The biggest, and most common mistake is that most of the time, we’re not fully present in the moment. We’re either thinking about the next thing that has to get done (or the next 10 things that have to get done) – which is fine if what you’re doing right now is planning – or we’re worrying about what’s going to happen, or not happen, or thinking about stuff that’s already happened. This is not only exhausting, but it creates stress, and drains our energy!
When our mental energy is so scattered, we can’t do our best work, or be fully present with the people we love, or really enjoy our lives.
One quick, easy thing you can do to relieve stress, and be more fully present in the moment, is simply to notice your breath. When we get stressed, our breathing becomes short and shallow. So, when you notice this, just stop and take a moment to breathe.
Just for a moment, put your attention on your breath. As you inhale, feel the sensation of the air going all the way down into your belly, and as you exhale, just allow your body to relax. Take a few long, slow, deep breaths – allowing yourself to get more and more relaxed with each breath. You can even close your eyes, if you like, and bring your attention within yourself… just focusing on your breath, and allowing your body to relax.
This is a really simple, but powerful thing you can do periodically throughout the day to relieve stress, and be more fully present in the moment. The more you do it, the more calm, centered, and present you’ll be.
