BUSTING THIS ADRENAL MYTH
How’s your adrenal health? If you have chronic stress, you likely have adrenal fatigue, adrenal exhaustion, or whatever adrenal dysfunction label you want to use. But here’s the myth. I hear this all the time — “There’s nothing that can be done about adrenal health challenges!”
Here’s my technical and official rebuttal — PHOOEY!
Of course you can do something about your adrenal health challenges! Haven’t I said a bajillion times that the body is amazingly and divinely created to heal? (Okay, maybe not a bajillion, but at least a billion….)
The important part to remember is that you can feel better tomorrow than you do today.
Stress is a key factor in adrenal health dysfunction. Chronic stress spurs the adrenal glands into action. They pump out an ever-flowing cascade of the hormone, cortisol. Your body says, “We’re ready for attack! We’re ready to fight! We’re ready for imminent danger!”
But your body is ready for anything
EXCEPT healing.
Here’s a shortlist of a few health concerns you may experience when your adrenal health is challenged:
- Mood swings
- Dry skin, hair, nails
- Sleep disturbances
- Digestive disturbances
- Thyroid and vital hormonal imbalances
- Lowered immunity
- Cognitive dysfunction
- Muscle and joint pain
- Slowed healing (including wound healing)
Here are a few health challenges associated with poor adrenal health:
Alzheimer’s, heart disease, autoimmune dysfunction, fibromyalgia,
chronic fatigue, type 2 diabetes, obesity, generalized insulin resistance,
and more….
Sound familiar?
The body can’t heal (or do it well) under a state of chronic stress. So, how do we tell our adrenals to cool their jets?
I’m SO glad you asked!
It’s a myth that there are NO actions you can take to begin the healing process for your poor, overused, and exhausted adrenals. The fact is that there are hundreds if not thousands of actions you can take to begin the healing process.

I look forward to learning more. Spent many years in the ‘fight-flight’ mode and much stress from the past (unknown to me), present stresses of life and relationships, and ‘trigger’ stressors. Making headway but it is a process. Encouraged day by day. I have found a great connection between my mind and body. Exploring that and acknowledging what that does indeed mean may very well be another saving graces of healing further. Thank you, Sue for all you do as well.
Julie — you’re SO right about it being a process. But wouldn’t you rather be “in process” than in the shadows wondering what to do? I applaud your progress and openness to take the next step. In the weeks ahead, I’ll be shining a light on this very important topic and I look forward to knowing you’re along for the ride!
I am very interested in this topic. I just wish what I know now, I knew when I was younger and maybe some of my health issues would be less severe now! Fibromyalgia, chronic severe arthritis, diabetes, sleep issues, wight problems, anxiety/depression etc etc. In recent times I have tackled current stress levels fairly well with meditation but there is always more to learn!
Chris — I completely agree! I wish I’d known at 21 what I know now. However, isn’t that always the case even if it isn’t about health? What’s amazed me over and over (and should stop amazing me — but it doesn’t) is that the human body can heal and improve at ANY age. I have clients in their early 30s and others in their late 70s. They’re all seeking healthier solutions and finding themselves getting better and better every day. That’s simply wonderful! I’m glad you’re firmly on the path of dealing with your health concerns and I wish you the absolute best.
Thanks so much for your wise words and encouragement, Sue.
