Is your fibro brain your ally or enemy? Have you wondered why you can think one thing yet do another? You know that your fibromyalgia brain can work both in your favor and against you – but do you know when and why? Don’t allow chronic illness to run the show.

Here’s a short and sweet overview.

Fibro Brain – Ally or Enemy

It may seem counter-intuitive, but there are many logical and valid reasons for your brain to want to stop you in your tracks. Here’s a super-simplified overview of the principles of how your brain functions.

  • Your BRAIN wants to keep you safe
  • Your BRAIN perceives CHANGE as dangerous (i.e. NOT safe)
  • Your BRAIN wants to protect you from danger
  • Therefore, your BRAIN will create every single block, negative thought, rejection of an idea, and “stay stuck” suggestion imaginable to keep you exactly where you are.

Anytime you choose to begin a new program, try something different, or learn something new, keep this fact in mind.

Fibro Brain – Enlist the Ally

Now you know WHY the brain does what it does (it simply wants to keep you safe). And, you know when this behavior kicks into gear. It happens WHEN you want to change any behavior or start something new. Now, it’s time to make this natural tendency to work in your favor.

The brain can only form ideas and reactions by comparing situations that have already happened.

Get that?

The brain can only come up with ideas and suggestions based on past experiences.

Therefore, anything that you want to do differently – anything that you haven’t done before or achieved before – is NEW. And your brain can’t wrap it’s little neurotransmitters around that.

Your brain has difficulty in accepting or feeling safe about anything new.

This is why practice is the name of the game. Practice feeling what it would be like to have a new situation, goal, or behavior you desire. Practice thinking about it. Practice visualizing and imagining it. Make the achievement of it – in your imagination – as real, vivid, visceral, and exciting as possible.

You’re now working in alignment with how your brain works best.

Fibro Brain – Thwart the Enemy

There are dozens (if not hundreds) of ways to thwart self-sabotage, negative self-talk, and overcome limiting beliefs.

But they all begin with this step – seeing the brain/mind for what it is.

You now KNOW that your brain wants to prevent you from taking that next step. You’re now prepared for the trickle (or onslaught) of negative thoughts once you decide on a new plan.

So, the very act of doing something different – contrary to what your mind tells you – builds new neural pathways muscles.

What new habit do you want to create? What new positivity practice do you wish to do daily? What stress-management technique sounds like a good option for you?

  1. Knowing that “the brain can only come up with ideas and suggestions based on past experiences” is so important when we’re trying to make changes. That’s why with health coaching, we take small steps, building on habits we’ve already established, to make changes that “stick” and give us the results we want. Thanks for sharing some great information, Sue!

  2. Tried joining Positive Prime. It says my email address is badly formatted! Tried again wo ur referral code, same result. 😦
